The Problem
Getting tested can be a scary experience whether you're at high risk or not. Mediaux was created as companion app for a take home HIV test. Mediaux would not only help users to take the test, but also try to alleviate some of the stress associated with getting their results.
Key Features
Secret Login
We decided to hide the login to the app within a fully functional calculator. The only way to access the app or see anything to do with the app is through this interface.
One of the major pain points that we discovered was that people often use at home tests because of religious or social stigmas that are associated with taking the test. By adding this feature we hoped to make the user feel they had a heightened sense of security and privacy.

Learning Oppurtunities
We created a quiz that the user could take while waiting for their results. The quiz was both informative and gathered superficial information that could help the user after they received their results.
We created this quiz because we found the 20 minutes that you have to wait for your results was the most stressful. Your mind can wander pretty far in 20 min. We wanted to incorporate options for the user to occupy themselves for those 20 min.

Getting Your Results
The most stressful part of taking the test is the results, even if you know you have nothing to worry about, everyone has the same nervous adrenaline laden reaction, "...but what if?"
After 3 rounds of user testing we started to understand that what people needed was clear concise results and what people needed after they got their results were options. Wording and perceived intent is paramount when dealing with a situation as sensitive and stressful as this. This was the the most difficult part of this project by far.

Process
Our initial approach to this app was to produce screens and solutions to some of the problems that we uncovered through our research and user testing. What we ended up finding out was that words are powerful and just because a screen is pretty or flashy does not mean that it is effective. When dealing with sensitive situations the manner in which you inform your user is imperative to your success.
